JA Worldwide™ (Junior Achievement) is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating young people about business, economics, and free enterprise. JA programs are taught by volunteers in class and after school at locations throughout the United States of America and in 96 countries.

Tell me about JA's programs.
JA programs span grades K-12, and focus on seven key content areas: business, citizenship, economics, entrepreneurship, ethics/character, financial literacy, and career development. Through 495 offices around the world, JA reaches approximately seven million students per year in inner cities, suburbs, and rural areas.Each year teachers in more than 287,500 classrooms around the world welcome JA programs.

What does JA teach?
The JA curriculum is aimed at preparing students to be successful, focusing on personal finance, careers and workforce readiness, business, economics, entrepreneurism, character building and civics.

How does JA teach it?
The JA curriculum is delivered as part of regular classes during the school day by volunteers recruited from local businesses and the community, in partnership with the classroom teachers. The curriculum consists of hands-on activities that allow the students to learn by doing.

Where does JA get volunteers?
JA’s nearly 214,000 classroom volunteers around the world come from all walks of life and include business people, college students, parents, and retirees. These dedicated individuals are the backbone of the organization.

The JA curriculum correlates to CT state standards for: Mathematics, Language Arts, Social Studies, Business and Finance Technology Education, Marketing Education, Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Cooperative Work Education.

How do you know that JA works?
JA is one of a few global non-profits to use independent, third-party evaluators to gauge the impact of its programs. Since 1993, independent evaluators have conducted studies on JA’s effectiveness. Findings prove that JA has a positive impact in a number of critical areas. These results are available, for free, upon request. Summaries of the findings also are published in the JA Programs section of www.ja.org.

How long do the programs take to complete?
Programs range from 5 classroom periods for elementary school programs to as many as 8 to 16 classroom periods for high school programs. Traditionally, JA volunteers visit the class once a week. Some elementary schools opt to provide their students with the entire five-session curriculum on "JA in a Day".

How does JA train its volunteers?
JA trains all volunteers before they go into a classroom and provides each volunteer with a comprehensive guide for each program that includes detailed lesson plans, scripts and helpful tips on teaching techniques. Each participating teacher also receives a copy of the guide.
