JA Worldwide (Junior Achievement) is the world's largest organization dedicated to educating students in grades K through 12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy. JA programs are taught by volunteers from the business community who partner with teachers in the classroom. Founded in 1919, JA Worldwide reached more than 9.4 million students throughout the United States and around the globe last year. Its purpose is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.
Junior Achievement of Western Connecticut was founded in 1946, and since that time has reached nearly 240,000 students in the twenty communities it serves. It is governed by a Board of Directors with the support of area community boards and raises all of its own dollars through foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, individual gifts and special events.
During 2007 - 2008, 19,400 students participated in the myriad in-school and after-school programs offered by Junior Achievement of Western Connecticut. Those programs operated in 20 school districts, 91 individual schools, and 938 classes through the generosity of nearly 1,250 volunteers from throughout the region. It is expected that by the conclusion of this academic year, JA will have reached close to another 20,000 students, the most in its history.
